This bird is spectacular! What kind is it?
Purple Sandpipers. These shorebirds breed in the Canadian arctic, Greenland, Iceland, Faeroes, Spitsbergen, and Russia. In eastern North America, birds migrate south as far as New England and winter on the Atlantic coast on windswept, rocky shores where they feed on a variety small invertebrates. In Nova Scotia and Maine, much of the winter diet is made up of small periwinkles. I have seen them swept off rocks in bone chilling temperatures by enormous waves, only to bob back up and keep right on feeding.
Thank you! They are beautiful little birds.
Tough little fellows...amazing!Ron
