It is way too early to find nesting snapping turtles - but I'm thinking about them anyway, after stumbling on photos of beach beauties I met over the past 5 years. The eyes of snappers are a remarkably beautiful thing. Like a full solar eclipse, the pupil is marked by four cardinal points in the burning sky; ancient, primitive, timeless, with incredible acuity. Rugged armored scales and skin, resembling burnished leather, help to protect the turtles from a dangerous world of predators and people. Two prominent barbels, that appear like whiskers on the chin are thought to have sensory ability. Their true function is however, still unclear. Snapping turtles move with surprising speed, grace and agility for their size. They never cease to amaze me!
